Community Bike Ride with Miguel Hidalgo Nuevo and Miguel Hidalgo Viejo

On March 3rd the Careyes Foundation Staff took on our final two villages of Miguel Hidalgo Nuevo and Miguel Hidalgo Viejo for a joint community bike ride. With our biggest group yet of 50 students and 12 parent volunteers, we set off into the gorgeous landscape of Miguel Hidalgo Viejo along the Rio. Almost all of the students who participated came with their own bikes, but as usual we loaned out our bikes and helmets and did maintenance on the children’s bikes before the ride began.  All of the children, even the three first graders, the youngest of the group, showed extraordinary excitement and perseverance as we biked our way to a specific part of the river perfect for swimming. Beforehand, a friend of the Foundation who works in Careyes and lives in Miguel Hidalgo prepared, along with his family, delicious tortas and agua fresca for all of the participants. We relaxed in the shade, ate lunch, and swam in the cool, clear river for an hour or so before heading back to the town centers of first Miguel Hidalgo Viejo, and then Miguel Hidalgo Nuevo to bring all of the children home to their respective villages. The children are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful environment, despite other aspects of life which may not be described as so fortunate. We as the Careyes Foundation are happy to provide the children these opportunities to experience the environment around them and expose them to fun constructive ways of spending their time.
