Cinema and Community Night with Juan Gil, Arroyo Seco, and Agua Caliente Vieja

At the end of February we completed our first series of educational movie screenings with visits from the final four villages that we serve: Francisco Villa on February 23rd, and the three smaller villages of Juan Gil, Arroyo Seco, and Agua Caliente Vieja on February 24th. Joining forces with the STPCC, these screenings began with a presentation by biologist Alejandro Peña about the nesting process and the impacts of animal and human predators. We then played A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures, an animated film that follows sea turtle characters as they overcome the challenges of global warming, pollution, and being captured by humans. By pairing this fun movie with an educational introduction, we have been able to engage the children from ten different villages in understanding the environmental issues facing sea turtles today. We will soon begin our next educational series focussing on a different topic that we hope will be just as well-received as the last!
