Even though this community bike ride fell on a long weekend, we were pleasantly surprised to be joined by fifty children and four parent volunteers from the villages of Emiliano Zapata and Francisco Villa. After loaning out bikes and helmets, we set off to ride along the outskirts of Zapata past papaya and mango trees, cows and horses, and views of mountains and farms. We made it to a beautiful part of Rio Cuixmala that was swarming with tadpoles, baby frogs, and small fish; to say that the children enjoyed exploring their natural surroundings is an understatement. We ate snacks, rehydrated, and cooled off in the river before returning home. The children are grateful to have such natural beauty in their backyard and our hope is that they will continue to explore their natural surroundings with their families.
