Preparing Together Is Caring Together: Hurricane Preparedness in Our Communities

This hurricane season, The Careyes Foundation brought practical prevention information and community connection to 12 communities across our region.

During hurricane season, being prepared is one of the most important ways we can care for one another. Through our Disaster Prevention Program, The Careyes Foundation visited communities across the region with a clear goal: to share information that helps children, young people, and adults be better prepared for the arrival of a hurricane.

Over the course of the program, we delivered 6 hours of prevention talks in 12 communities: Agua Caliente Vieja, Agua Caliente Nueva, Hidalgo Nuevo, Hidalgo Viejo, Arroyo Seco, Emiliano Zapata, Francisco Villa, Chamela, San Mateo, Juan Gil Preciado, Punta Pérula, and La Fortuna.

In each community, we discussed the main risks associated with hurricanes and the steps we can take before, during, and after a weather event. Through talks supported by videos, participants received practical guidance on identifying safe places, preparing an emergency backpack, staying informed, and taking measures to protect their families.

But learning about prevention can also be an opportunity to come together as a community.

That is why, after every talk, our Mobile Cinema opened its doors for everyone to enjoy a family film. What began as a day focused on preparedness also became a space for connection, entertainment, and neighbors gathering together.

In total, 224 children, teenagers, and adults took part in these activities, showing that prevention is a shared responsibility, regardless of age.

Hurricane season reminds us that while we cannot control the power of nature, we can choose how prepared we are to face it. Through information, organization, and community participation, we can reduce risks and better care for the people around us.

At The Careyes Foundation, we will continue working to make prevention not only a response to an emergency, but a lasting culture of preparedness and community care.

Prepare today, protect tomorrow. Stay informed, make an emergency plan with your family, and help build a safer, more resilient community.
