On the final evening of the ArteCareyes Film & Arts Festival, we invited the students and families from all ten of the villages where we teach to a special outdoor movie screening.

Pérula Movie Night
This month we began our new series of educational movie screenings with the children from Pérula. We showed "Ratatouille," and before the film, Rebeca Martinez, a chef at a Careyes restaurant La Coscolina, came to speak to the children on her experience of becoming a chef and what it is like to now be a chef.
Community Bike Ride with Miguel Hidalgo Nuevo and Miguel Hidalgo Viejo
On March 3rd the Careyes Foundation Staff took on our final two villages of Miguel Hidalgo Nuevo and Miguel Hidalgo Viejo for a joint community bike ride. With our biggest group yet of 50 students and 12 parent volunteers, we set off into the gorgeous landscape of Miguel Hidalgo Viejo along the Rio.

School Spotlight: Arroyo Seco
The primary school in the small village of Arroyo Seco has especially responsive welcoming and responsive to our English Book & Lessons Program. Of the 452 village residents, there are only 32 children enrolled in the two-classroom primary school. We sat down with the school’s principal, Juan Silva Suárez, to discuss the history of the school, his experience as a teacher and principal, and how the children and community have benefited from the English Program.

Opportunities for creativity
Following our Beyond Borders curriculum, every English lesson that we teach to our primary school students incorporates some type of artistic activity. Because we believe that it is important for children to have opportunities to express themselves creatively and these schools do not have formal art programs, we are proud that our English program gives the students a creative outlet!

On December 8, we invited children from the village of Miguel Hidalgo Viejo to the third installment in our sea turtle educational series. For this event, our resident biologist Alejandro Peña discussed how the sea turtle nesting process is impacted by animal and human predators.

On December 2nd, we organized another bike excursion with the children of the elementary and middle schools in Arroyo Seco and many of their parents and siblings. The following Saturday, we set out on bicycles once more, this time in Punta Pérula, the northernmost village we serve.

Bright and early community ride!
On Saturday, November 26, children from the two primary schools in the neighboring villages of Francisco Villa and Emiliano Zapata joined us for a 5-km community bike ride. Many children were so enthusiastic that they arrived with their parents and siblings before 8am!
