Turtles and Spiders and Toads, Oh My!

Together with researchers from the UNAM biology station in Chamela and Central Washington University, we hosted an environmental education workshop for preschool- and elementary-age kids and their families in the village of Emiliano Zapata. Almost 60 children and parents attended! Day one of the two-part event gave participants the chance to learn about local flora and fauna by getting an up-close or even hands-on look at preserved specimens and live animals. During the second part of the workshop, the kids worked with a local artist to paint a mural of the plants and wildlife they’d encountered. The artwork will add some color to the school walls while celebrating the incredible biodiversity that surrounds us in this remarkable region.
