Over the past several months, we have been working closely with La Huerta municipal government to restore the Casa de la Cultura (cultural center) in our neighboring community of Emiliano Zapata. This space will be home to one of the Careyes Foundation’s most exciting new initiatives, the Vocational Training Center! This program is designed to help local adults and adolescents develop technical skills and prepare for a career. While students will complete courses and obtain certifications through a free online platform, they will also have access to a computer lab where they can receive support and guidance from our trained instructor.
The Casa de la Cultura is a community center that has been used for dance and exercise classes and was previously home to our Music School. However, it has largely been underutilized and had recently fallen into disrepair. The building’s classrooms, bathrooms, and exterior have been refurbished with key improvements, including measures to make the space more secure.
We are now set to get the Vocational Training Center open and running, and we look forward to seeing other community activities and events benefit from access to this fresh and functional space!
