New Photography Workshop by Beatriz Sokol

We are pleased to announce that a new series of art workshops has begun!

For this cycle we're collaborating with Beatriz Sokol, a Mexico City-based photographer whose previous work with children and photography, particularly in Chiapas, makes her a fantastic fit to work alongside the kids of Costa Alegre. This project is mainly focused on photography and visual language. It is also an exploration of the kids' perception through their imagination and creativity.

About the project, Beatriz explains: "Visual language is a great channel to know ourselves and tell our stories. These days there are more photographic or visual works that tell stories of communities from the people who are part of them. I think it is important to provide tools to facilitate this so that they are the ones who build and represent themselves through this language and show us what they want and have to say.
At the same time, the learning that children can have with these tools allows creative development at different levels, learning to communicate through a language that is very common in our society facilitates the understanding of the things that surround us. As an artist, it is important to me to create in favor of the story, in that sense my work is not only focused on photography but takes tools such as writing, video, and audio to better express what I want to say. In that sense for me, it is important not to limit the children with some discipline but to invite them to imagine what for them is more inspiring and at the same time more correct to create and tell their story."

For the duration of this project, Careyes Foundation will be updating the back area in the gallery every week with the photos taken by the artist and drawings made by the kids. Come by to visit!
