Construction Complete at the STPCC

Restoration of the staff shelter at the Sea Turtle Protection & Conservation Center on Playa Teopa is now complete! The amazingly dedicated turtle sanctuary team works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year patrolling the Careyes beaches and protecting around 2,000 nests annually. With funding from Brent Martini and the Brignone family, we built a new shelter using quality, durable materials designed to withstand the elements. The fresh palapa will keep things dry during the rainy season, and the wooden structure has been treated to protect against insects and moisture from the sand. A new loft maximizes the space, as the shelter serves multiple purposes—office, storage, and a place for the staff to refuel and rest.

The STPCC’s work has continued, uninterrupted through the pandemic. In accordance with safe social distancing measures, only one staff member is on duty at a time, and visits to the turtle sanctuary are suspended until further notice.
