Sounds Of The Jungle

We're pleased to announce the arrival of our third artist-in-residence in our Art Workshop Program!

For this residency, Mexican sound artist Alonso Hernández has designed a program to engage students in active-listening exercises through the use of drawings and simple electroacoustic tools. Sound art uses sound both as its medium (what it is made out of) and as its subject (what it is about), so his SOUNDSCAPE WORKSHOP for local kids will feature sessions such as active listening, sounds, and space, soundwalk, from box to speaker box, and sound sources!

The kids will be drawing A LOT, as well as recording sounds from their local towns, and producing a soundscape that will be played on their own handmade speakers with objects such as plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, old Tupperware, etc!

This third installment of the Art Workshop Program continues to be an exploration, through the eyes and imagination of children, of the eleven villages surrounding Careyes. In addition to boosting environmental awareness through the reuse and re-signification of objects, the program helps imagination development as well as emotional expression. The kids are introduced to different artistic practices by Mexican emerging artists who visit the area for a three-month period, impart a 10-15 week workshop, and create an exhibition in our gallery by the end of their stay.
